Apple Plans to Take Another Bite Out of Dirty Energy
We know we can have healthier communities right now and a livable future for kids growing up today. But to get there, we must transform the way we produce and consume energy. That’s got to start with a commitment to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
We know we can have healthier communities right now and a livable future for kids growing up today. But to get there, we must transform the way we produce and consume energy. That’s got to start with a commitment to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
Apple maintains its success by continually coming up with the next cool thing. Well, they’re at it again, but this time it’s not a shiny new device. Their latest plan is to jump into the energy market by selling their excess solar power to electric utilities.

It is unlikely at this point that the newly-formed Apple Energy, LLC, will sell energy directly to homes and businesses. However, it could play an important role in shifting the grid to 100 percent renewable energy by providing solar to places that need power at times when Apple facilities are generating more than they use.
Another benefit for Apple in going big on solar is the greater energy security provided by staying largely off the grid. This is especially true for their new “Spaceship” headquarters being built in Cupertino, California, which is being fitted with an impressive array of solar panels that will power the building.

Apple’s plans are but one of many examples of blurring the line between energy consumers and energy producers, with power being provided by more than just the electric utilities. If done right, such initiatives can put more stakeholders in the driver’s seat and lead to a cleaner, smarter, fairer grid.
Be prepared to see more large corporations, communities, institutions and citizens taking back the power.
