Senators from States Hit by Sandy Urge Pres. Obama to Cut Carbon Pollution from Power Plants

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez, Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy sent a letter to President Obama today, describing the devastation that Hurricane Sandy caused in their states, to urge him to set limits on carbon pollution from power plants. Scientists have warned that global warming is helping to intensify extreme weather events, and power plants are the largest source of the carbon pollution that’s fueling global warming. The letter was loudly applauded by Environment America and others.

Environment America Applauds Secretary Jewell’s Firm Rejection of Drilling off of our Atlantic Coast

Boston, MA. – Yesterday, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell rebuffed the oil and gas industry’s latest effort to bring offshore drilling to the Atlantic coast.  Her comments came after hearings in House and Senate committees where Republicans pushed to overturn the Obama administration’s decision to keep the eastern seaboard free from deepwater drilling damage. Jewell Announces the Country’s first Offshore Wind Auction

Washington, D.C. – This Tuesday the Interior Department released further details on the United States’ first offshore wind auction. The two lease areas are in federal waters facing Rhode Island and Massachusetts and will be auctioned at the same time. Environment America is the federation of 29 state-based groups including Environment Rhode Island and Environment Massachusetts.
