Washington, D.C.—Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed one of the most sweeping attacks on Americans’ air and water in recent memory. The passage of the bill (H.R. 3409)—which would do everything from allow more pollution in our waterways, to rollback the recently finalized carbon pollution standards for cars and light trucks—adds to this House of Representatives’ record as the most anti-environment House in the history of Congress. H.R. 3409 would also overturn EPA’s scientific finding that global warming pollution endangers public health and the environment, block EPA from cutting carbon pollution from new power plants (despite a record 3.1 million Americans having voiced their support for such action), and block EPA’s standard for mercury pollution from power plants—a standard that is projected to save 11,000 lives annually.

Anna Aurilio, Environment America’s Washington, D.C. Office Director, issued the following statement in response to today’s vote:

“Today the House of Representatives delivered on a wish list for the country’s biggest polluters. We are dismayed that so many members of Congress voted for dirtier air and more polluted water. Thankfully, this bill never had a chance of being brought up in the Senate, making the House vote nothing more than a disgusting charade to entertain the polluters’ lobbyists.”
