U.S. Congress FAILS to Protect our Environment and our families’ health so far in 2017

Today Environment America released its federal scorecard evaluating how the U.S. Congress voted on issues related to clean air and clean water and other environmental protections. Margie Alt, Executive Director of Environment America, said:
“If this were my spring report card, I’d be more than a little nervous to show it to my parents. I hope the congressional leadership feels sheepish about the American public seeing how poorly they’ve done protecting our air and water since January.
“With an average score of 47% for the U.S. Senators and 38% for members of the U.S. House of Representatives, most of our elected officials need to do a lot more homework when it comes to protecting this country’s beloved mountains, rivers, and streams and ensuring a sustainable climate for our families.
“Of course averages can be deceiving. A lot of Members had a perfect 100% score — 43 in the Senate and 136 in the House. We applaud their commitment to keeping our air safe to breathe and our water safe to drink.
“But we also had 49 Senators who had total goose eggs, and in the House 216 members failed to vote to protect our air and water even one time.
Those who have called this the most anti-environmental congress we’ve ever seen, may just be right.”
