Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline Should Flunk the Climate Test

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the State Department released an environmental impact statement on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport tar sands from Canada to the Gulf Coast.
Environment America’s Washington, D.C., Office Director Anna Aurilio, issued the following statement in response:
“Just this week, President Obama reiterated his commitment to tackling global warming. Secretary of State John Kerry has been a leader in the movement to stop global warming. We call on both of these leaders to protect Americans now and in the future, and just say no to the Keystone XL pipeline and to tar sands oil.
“The State Department’s report mostly discounts the enormous environmental impacts of building the pipeline, but for the first time acknowledges that going forward with Keystone XL could increase global warming pollution. Given the devastating droughts and wildfires we’ve seen over the past year, it’s clear that approving the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline is not in the nation’s interest.”
