Senate Energy Bill Passes

Environment America is the new home of U.S. PIRG’s environmental work.

The good news is that the Senate energy bill takes a much needed and long overdue step forward on fuel economy standards.

While we are disappointed that the Senate did not take the opportunity to follow the lead of 23 states and the District of Columbia by passing a national renewable electricity standard, we are encouraged by Sens. Reid and Bingaman’s colloquy committing to an up or down vote on this critical piece of any sensible energy plan.

The American people strongly support dramatically increasing the use of clean renewable energy from sources like wind and solar power.  We look forward to working with the leadership to ensure a substantial increase in the amount of renewable energy provided by our nation’s electric utilities.
