Maryland Governor Announces 15 Percent Reduction in Energy Consumption by 2015

We are pleased that Gov. O’Malley announced goals for energy efficiency that establish Maryland as a national front-runner in smarter energy use.

By establishing a goal of reducing energy consumption 15 percent by 2015, Gov. O’Malley joins two other state executives who have set aggressive targets for reducing energy use. In April, New York Gov. Spitzer announced his state would reduce energy use 15 percent by 2015 and New Jersey Gov. Corzine established a target of cutting his state’s electric and natural gas demand by 20 percent below projected levels by 2020.

The Governor’s plan of action focuses on reducing energy use in state buildings, but that alone will not reduce Maryland’s energy use 15 percent over the next 7 ½ years. Aggressive investment in utility efficiency programs offered to residential and small business customers will be essential if the 15 percent reduction is to be met. Maryland PIRG will continue to advocate agressive energy efficiency targets for utility companies. Reducing total utility electric sales 20 percent by 2020 through energy efficiency will save consumers money on their electric bill and reduce strain on the electric grid.

It will take strong leadership from the statewide level to restore accountability to our electric system and get us on track to smarter energy use. Gov. O’Malley’s announcement today is an encouraging sign that he will rise to the challenge and tackle our state’s energy problems.
