NASHVILLE,
TN—Attendees of the annual National Conference of State Legislatures
(NCSL) convention will be treated to a free screening of “An
Inconvenient Truth” on Thursday, August 17th at 3:30 p.m. at
the Opry Mills Regal Theatre. U.S. PIRG, the National Association of
State PIRGs, is hosting the screening, also sponsored by Paramount
Classics. The film is the third largest grossing documentary in
history and has received top reviews from Larry King, Roger Ebert, the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, and Commercial Appeal of Memphis, TN among others.
“The
film carries a critical message about the urgent need to address global
warming,” said Lawrence Bender, one of the film’s producers. “With
inaction at the federal level, now is the time for states to take the
lead in addressing global warming pollution.
Are we going to be the first generation in the history of our country
to leave a problem to our children that they won’t be able to solve?”
While
progress on clean energy and global warming solutions at the federal
level remains elusive, it is offset by the tremendous advances made in
the states. U.S. PIRG, the National Association of State PIRGs, is
working with state legislators and regulators to take action on a range
of policies to reduce energy consumption; utilize cleaner, renewable
energy sources; make cars cleaner and more fuel efficient; and reduce
the global warming pollution that results from our reliance on fossil
fuels. For example, the California Legislature is considering AB32,
the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. If passed, AB 32 would
create the nation’s first cap on global warming pollution, mandating
25% cuts in emissions by 2020.
“Thankfully,
state officials have recognized the importance of moving toward a new
energy future that makes our nation more secure and our environment
cleaner, and they are starting to act,” said Larry Alexander, Senior
Legislative Strategist for U.S. PIRG, National Association of State
PIRGs. “We are excited to work with Paramount Classics and show this
film to state legislators from around the country to inspire more to
take action.”
The NCSL Annual Convention is in Nashville, TN and runs through August 18th.
