States’ Right to Adopt Stricter Global Warming Emissions Standards for Cars Defended by Key Senate Committee

Statement of Rob Sargent, Energy Program Director on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committees Approval of the Global Warming Pollution from Vehicles Act of 2008 (S.2555)

We are pleased that a key Senate committee has taken a stand in support of states’ ability to adopt emission standards to reduce global warming pollution.  America needs every tool at its disposal in the fight against global warming and state standards, and the state clean cars programs are a vital means of combating this problem.  Senator Boxer and other members of the Senate Environment and Public Works committee deserve tremendous credit for standing up to the automobile industry’s efforts to stifle one of the best tools that states have to reduce global warming emissions.

The Global Warming Pollution from Vehicles Act of 2008 (S.2555) would reject the stunningly bad decision by the Bush Administration to deny a waiver for California to adopt Greenhouse Gas Emission standards for cars.  It would permit California and the 13 other states that have moved to implement standards that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from new motor vehicles.  These states are taking the lead in tackling global warming pollution by adopting clean car standards.  The clean car standards will reduce cumulative greenhouse gas pollution 40% more than new national fuel economy standards through 2020.  If allowed to proceed, this would be the most effective step yet taken to curb America’s contribution to global warming.
