Internships for a Greener America

Your campus may be going green, but is your country?

From the White House to state capitols to city halls, Americans have elected hundreds of new leaders who share our vision of a world where our lives are powered by the wind and the sun, the air is clear and safe to breathe, our rivers and lakes are clean and toxic-free, and the forests, parks and other special places we love are protected and preserved.

But having a few good leaders isn’t enough. Not when we face so many powerful industries willing to pay practically any price to block real change.

That’s where Environment America comes in.

Our mission is to research and advocate the policies and build and mobilize the public support necessary to win positive change for our environment. We have more than 100 professional staff working with our state-based groups in our national federation and in our Washington, D.C., office. We’ve organized 1 million members, activists and political allies to join us, winning changes that mean more solar and wind power, less global warming pollution, and more protections for our parks, waterways, forests and wilderness areas.

But we still have much more to do. We need to do more to document the problems, advocate the right policies, educate the public, mobilize more people to take action, build broader and stronger coalitions, and train and develop more organizers, advocates and other leaders to keep building the kind of support that can sweep past even the most powerful opposition. That’s where an internship with Environment America comes in.

Internship Description

Internships with Environment America offer students a unique, mentored experience.  As an intern, you’ll work one-on-one with some of the nation’s top environmental advocates and organizers.  While acquiring the basic skills to analyze issues and develop solutions to problems that threaten our environment, interns learn that activism and participation in the democratic process bring results.  Though responsibilities vary, most internships involve:

•    Conducting research on critical environmental problems and preparing investigative reports
•    Coordinating media events, assisting in the preparation of news releases and opinion pieces
•    Attending meetings with lawmakers and other decision makers
•    Working with coalition partners and staff in our federation of environmental groups
•    Monitoring the progress of legislation and the actions of federal agencies

Field Internship: Work with Environment America’s campaign and advocacy staff to demonstrate support for our issues.  Over the course of the internship, you will learn the basics of a variety of issues, and then reach out to individuals, media outlets, organizations, and decision-makers to build visibility and gain their support.

Legislative Internship: Over the course of the internship you will work with Environment America’s advocacy staff gaining in-depth knowledge on one or two specific issues.  You may help to research and write reports, organize media events, build national coalitions, and lobby governmental or corporate decision-makers in support of specific policy proposals.

Media Internship: Over the course of the internship, you will work with Environment America to organize press conferences, pitch stories to reporters, respond to breaking news and requests for information and interviews, and assist in writing and placing opinion pieces.

You may also have the opportunity to attend local, regional, and national program briefings where you’ll learn more about environmental issues and gain political skills.

Although Environment America internships are unpaid, students may receive academic credit from their college or university.  Environment America will also participate in college work-study programs.

Testimonials
I actually got to participate in every aspect of the campaign and see what it is like to be an advocate on a daily basis…It was awesome to actually meet with congressmen and it really made me feel like I was directly involved in the process.

This internship was so much more than I expected. I liked the opportunity to work on substantive things…and found the staffers to be so enthusiastic and helpful. The mentor program is a great way for us to…focus on an issue that particularly interested us. All my friends were jealous of my internship.
