Environmental Advocacy Positions

Meet Luke Metzger

Hi, my name is Luke Metzger and I am the Director of Environment Texas. I live in Austin, Texas (the live music capital of the world). As they say here in Texas, I wasn't born here, but I got here as soon as I could. Actually, I went to school at the University of Southern California and studied theatre and political science. I was actively involved in both acting and activism, but after seeing how cut-throat Hollywood is, I chose the kinder path of politics.

After college, I chose to work for Environment America because, after living in Los Angeles for four years, I had enough of smog and sprawl and really wanted to do something about it. I was also very impressed with the talented staff, the extensive training provided, and the incredible responsibility given to me. When the opportunity came up to move to Texas to start up a state organization, I high-tailed it here.

Since moving here, I've had the opportunity to work on some amazing campaigns. In 2005, I helped convince the Legislature to double the state's renewable energy mandate.  As a result, Texas is the national leader in wind power. In 2006, I helped convince Austin voters to approve a ballot measure to protect the watershed of Barton Springs, a treasured local swimming hole, by blocking a plan to develop the area.

I really love my job. I feel that if we can change things in Texas—of all places—we really do have a shot of saving this planet. And at Environment Texas, I have all the responsibility (and the support of a great national back-up team) I need to make it happen.
