Environmental Leaders Call on President Obama to Deliver Real Gas Saving Solutions

The leaders of the nation’s largest environmental groups today asked President Obama to create long-term relief for drivers at the pump by delivering the strongest fuel-efficiency and auto pollution standards for new vehicles currently under consideration. The administration will propose new fuel efficiency and auto pollution standards this September, with key decisions being made this summer. The request came in a letter signed by 33 environmental, science, and public health organizations, including the Union of Concerned Scientists, Environment America, Sierra Club and Republicans for Environmental Protection.

Hastings’ OCS Bill Passes; House Opens Mid-Atlantic to Drilling

Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1230, the Restarting American Offshore Leasing Act. Reversing President Obama’s decision to cancel drilling off the coast Virginia, this bill requires leasing in a 3 million acre area at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, speeds up leasing in the Gulf of Mexico, and bases those leases on the flawed environmental analysis that was done prior to the BP oil spill last summer.

Clean Cars Would Cut Pollution, Save Americans $66 Billion at the Gas Pump This Summer

As the average price of gas creeps closer to $4 per gallon and Americans brace for further price increases, a new Environment America Research & Policy Center report finds that more fuel efficient cars would save the average American family $513 at the gas pump this summer alone. The report was released as the Obama administration is developing new fuel efficiency and global warming pollution standards for cars and light trucks.

National Research Council Faults States for Water Protection Failures

Today the National Research Council of the National Academies issued a new report covering states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed: “Achieving Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Goals in the Chesapeake Bay: An Evaluation of Program Strategies and Implementation.” The report analyzes the tracking and verification of water cleanup actions. The report notes that many current measures are “low-hanging fruit,” like cover crops and sewage treatment plant upgrades. Very soon, states will need to start implementing more innovative approaches.
