Congress is preparing to introduce legislation that will determine how federal funding for transportation projects is spent over the next six years. We're calling for the legislation to:
- Include specific goals for reducing transportation-related pollution; and
- Help us to reduce our reliance on cars by enhancing access to cleaner forms of transportation, such
as public transit and rail, and making our communities more pedestrian-
and bicycle-friendly.
What's at stake
Transportation is responsible for a third of America's global warming emissions—and two-thirds of our oil consumption.
To cut our carbon footprint, we need to make it easier for Americans to get around on public transportation, on foot and by bike. That means investing in our public transit systems now, to boost and expand service to meet rising demand.
Increasing our transit capacity by 10 percent annually, we can reduce transportation-related global warming emissions 40 percent by 2030. That would reduce our use of oil by 3.5 million barrels every day by 2020, while creating green jobs and making our air cleaner to breathe.
