Earlier this year, with your help, the U.S.
House of Representatives passed an energy bill that would require utilities to
generate at least 15% of our electricity from clean energy sources. A
study by the Union of Concerned Scientists showed that the House-passed
national renewable electricity standard would save families and businesses $13
to $18.1 billion in lower electricity and natural gas bills by 2020, while
curbing global warming pollution and creating new jobs.
However, the Senate passed their own version of the bill that didn’t include
the clean energy standard passed by the House (though it did include important
steps to improve gas mileage). With the clock ticking, we do not yet have the
votes we need to pass the renewable electricity standard in the Senate.
If your friends don’t know their senators’
names, that’s ok. They can just call 202-224-3121, tell the operator
where they’re from, and the operator will patch them through. Here’s what they
should say: “Hi, my name is ______, and I’m from ______. I’m calling to
urge Senator ______ to support legislation to require utilities to generate 15%
of our electricity from clean, renewable sources."

State progress on clean energy
We helped enact energy-efficiency standards
for a variety of products in 11 states. We've worked with 25 states to
pass a renewable energy standards. And we've helped 12 states cut
global warming
pollution with clean cars programs. When enacted, these programs will
reduce gasoline
consumption by as much as 7.2 billion gallons per year in 2020 and save
consumers up to $16.7 billion annually at the pump in 2020. Read more.
