Toxic mining waste... in the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon is one of our greatest national treasures, but the canyon is threatened by a new “gold rush” and toxic mining pollution. Since 2003, 805 new mining claims have been staked within five miles of the Grand Canyon. With toxics like cyanide and sulfuric acid regularly polluting mining sites, the Grand Canyon faces a tremendous threat if we do not act now to protect the canyon from toxic mining pollution.

Petition Text

There are some places that we should be protecting forever. I believe the Grand Canyon is one of those places. Unfortunately, perfectly legal mining claims endanger the beauty and the health of this area. I worry that the rising price of gold, increasing demand for uranium, and a race to pollute before the end of the industry-friendly Bush administration all add up to a different Grand Canyon than the one I know. By passing H.R. 2262, the House took the first step to protect the Grand Canyon and other treasured lands from this trend expanding in the future. It’s time for the Senate to do the same.
