Save the Grand Canyon: Stop toxic mining!

Letter	Dear Senator, There are some places that we should be protecting forever. I believe the Grand Canyon is one of those places. Unfortunately, perfectly legal mining claims endanger the beauty and the health of this area. I worry that the rising price of gold, increasing demand for uranium, and a race to pollute before the end of the industry-friendly Bush administration all add up to a different Grand Canyon than the one I know. By passing H.R. 2262, the House took the first step to protect the Grand Canyon and other treasured lands from this trend expanding in the future. It’s time for the Senate to do the same. Sincerely,

The Grand Canyon is one of our greatest national treasures, but a new “gold rush” has created a disturbing trend. Since 2003, 800 new hardrock mining claims have been staked within 5 miles of the Grand Canyon. With cyanide regularly used to mine these minerals, the Grand Canyon could suffer from completely legal toxic contamination.
