Overfishing: Don't ignore the warning signs

New England’s collapsed fisheries are a warning we need to heed. And now, with many species -- like the Pacific leatherback turtle and the Atlantic's right whale -- facing threats from overfishing, we need to act now. Tell the administration we need strong overfishing rules now to protect oceans and marine wildlife on all our coasts.

Saving national forests

Thanks to our federation’s work, more than 1.5 million citizens nationwide called on the Clinton administration to protect pristine areas in our national forests, resulting in the Roadless Rule. When the Bush administration attempted to overturn the rule, we worked with governors in seven states to petition to protect their forests.

Letter Dear Dr. James Balsiger (Director of National Marine Fisheries Service): Every day we hear about more threats to our oceans and the animals that live there. Time is short for the fish, whales, dolphins and turtles that are threatened by overfishing, pollution, and habitat loss. Your agency is responsible for stopping powerful fishing interests from hurting our oceans. I urge you to enact strong regulations that prevent overfishing by establishing fishing limits that are well below those damaging levels. Our oceans are in such poor shape that we need to take extra precautions when setting fishing limits. I’m writing to ask you to write rules that leave enough fish, especially forage fish, in the sea for other animals to eat to keep our oceans in balance; manage the ocean like the ecosystem that it is; hold industry and fishery managers accountable when overfishing happens and these accountability rules should be modified quickly if they’re not working.
