Please ask Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to stop the expansion of offshore drilling on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and to reinstate the offshore drilling moratorium that protected our sensitive beaches and coasts for more than 25 years from the pollution and industrialization that oil and gas drilling brings.

Our coasts and oceans don’t need the additional stress from this risky business, not while threats from ocean warming, ocean acidification, pollution and overfishing persist. On its way out the door, the Bush administration left behind a plan to open up tens of millions of square miles of ocean to drilling. We're urging Secretary Salazar to scrap the Bush plan and submit a new plan that would allow no new drilling off our coasts.

Supporting the 26 year-old moratorium on new offshore drilling, we helped block an amendment that would have allowed drilling for natural gas as close as 50 miles off the coast of Virginia, off the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and off Assateague Island National Seashore and wildlife areas. Letter * Dear Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar: More drilling off our coasts is the wrong way to solve our energy security, energy supply and economic problems. Despite claims by Big Oil, drilling is still a risky business, which pollutes our oceans and threatens ocean life and sensitive coasts and beaches. That’s why I support efforts to reinstate the offshore drilling moratorium that protected our Atlantic and Pacific coasts for more than 25 years. Given all the damage already inflicted on our oceans from dead zones, ocean warming and acidification, overfishing and toxic pollution, I don’t want to add one more stress from drilling. I applaud your recent statements in support of getting clean, renewable energy from ocean winds, waves and currents rather than new drilling. You’ve said coastal states can get as much as 20 percent of their electricity from ocean wind energy alone. Please, direct the Department of Interior to prioritize these clean energy projects rather than allowing any new drilling off our coasts. Sincerely,
