Tell the Senate to Repower America

In the past month the House of Representatives passed historic legislation that for the first time ever puts a cap on global warming pollution and makes a massive investment in clean energy for America. The bill, the American Clean Energy and Security Act, while not perfect, is a significant and welcome first step.

The Senate is next to act and the battle being fought over our country's energy future is fierce. Big Oil and King Coal and their allies in Congress are pulling out all the stops to kill this bill and keep us on the same unsuccessful energy path.

We need you to take TWO important actions to get the Senate to strengthen and pass this bill.

FIRST, take a minute now to sign our online petition to the Senate.

THEN, on the next page submit an online photo petition to your senators.

A picture speaks a thousand words and it's important that our senators see in every way possible the overwhelming public support for repowering America with energy that is clean, safe and affordable.

To join the photo petition, simply take the action on this page and then you'll be given instructions on how to submit your own photos.

Recent actions and results

Environment America was successful in persuading the International Codes Council to increase the energy efficiency of their national model codes. The 2009 IECC will make new homes up to 20 percent more energy efficient.

More state action

The Maryland House of Delegates recently passed House Bill 315, Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act. The bill requires Maryland to reduce its global warming pollution 25 percent below 2006 levels by the year 2020. These reductions will be achieved through energy efficiency programs, increased transportation options, recycling, and incentives for green buildings, as well as pre-existing provisions established in the Healthy Air Act and the Clean Cars Act. Environment Maryland championed this bill and applauds the efforts of the Maryland State Government to reduce global warming pollution.

Sign the petition:

Dear Senator,

Now is the time to put American ingenuity and technological know-how to work repowering America with clean energy and reducing global warming pollution. I urge you to support strong energy efficiency and renewable energy standards, along with a cap on global warming pollution, to rebuild our economy with clean energy jobs and reduce pollution.

As the Senate begins work on an energy bill, I urge you to support:

1. A strong federal renewable energy standard (RES) of 25 percent by 2025.

2. A separate energy efficiency resource standard (EERS) saves 15 percent of electricity and 10 percent of natural gas by 2020.

Furthermore any energy bill should focus incentives on truly clean renewable energy and energy efficiency, not technologies that worsen our environmental problems, or that threaten pristine coastal areas and wild places.

Sincerely,
