No New Oil Drilling

On Sept. 30, protections for America’s coasts will expire, allowing oil companies to begin drilling for oil off beaches that have been protected for 27 years. To keep our protected coasts free of oil rigs and oil spills, Congress must act to continue the ban on new offshore oil drilling.

Increasing drilling off our pristine coasts makes no sense. Even the Bush administration’s Energy Information Administration says that off-shore drilling will have an “insignificant” effect on gas prices, even in the long-term, and we know that environmental and economic damage caused by spills and accidents is devastating. The real solution to our oil dependence is to get off oil by tapping our technological ingenuity to get cars on the road that get 100 miles to the gallon and investing renewable energy resources.

Use the form to the right to e-mail your representative and urge him/her to say no to offshore oil drilling on our protected beaches.

Recent actions and results

Environment America was successful in persuading the International Codes Council to increase the energy efficiency of their national model codes. The 2009 IECC will make new homes up to 20 percent more energy efficient.

More state action

The Maryland House of Delegates recently passed House Bill 315, Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act. The bill requires Maryland to reduce its global warming pollution 25 percent below 2006 levels by the year 2020. These reductions will be achieved through energy efficiency programs, increased transportation options, recycling, and incentives for green buildings, as well as pre-existing provisions established in the Healthy Air Act and the Clean Cars Act. Environment Maryland championed this bill and applauds the efforts of the Maryland State Government to reduce global warming pollution.
